Steve Kesler

Cathy Kesler

Cathy Kesler, whose grandmother always predicted that she would become a veterinarian, has always had a great passion for dogs. Every injured or hungry stray found a home at her house for as long as it chose to stay. Though she ended up pursuing a career as a nursing assistant, always there were dogs and a variety of other animals living at her house. When she and her husband Steve met eight years ago, their children had already grown up, and so Steve's beagles became their babies. Cathy loved hosting the few puppies they raised every year, and took over the care of the mothers and babies.

She has developed her pocket-beagles' bloodline directly from Steve's bloodline, choosing the healthiest and most attractive adults in order to make some very beautiful and sturdy puppies. Most of Cathy's adult pocket beagles were born at the home she and Steve share, and love to come inside and take naps on the couch with her. In fact, some of the mothers feel so comfortable with her and get so used to the care she provides to them, that they try to have their babies on Cathy's lap.

The Kesler Beagles

The Keslers make improvements in their kennels every year to always ensure that every dog lives in the healthiest environment possible. The kennels are sanitized daily and any new dogs are quarantined away from the general population until the Keslers are sure they aren't introducing anything harmful to the other dogs, and any medical needs are addressed promptly. Within the next few years, the family will be moving themselves and their kennels to a farm where there will be ample space for all the Keslers, beagles included, to enjoy life.

All new puppies are born at the Kesler residence, where Cathy brings the mothers inside two weeks before they are due and sleeps on the couch until the puppies are two weeks old in order to make certain of their safety (such as rescuing any puppy who unwittingly crawls underneath an exhausted new mom). Puppies remain in the house until they find their forever homes. They are somewhat paper-trained when they arrive at their new homes, and depending on the age of the puppy, may have started serious house training. Before they leave, puppies also begin learning a few commands. Grooming is done in-house on a weekly basis, and all puppies are very good about baths and getting their nails trimmed.

Vaccines and de-worming are done on a strict veterinarian-recommended schedule. Cathy is very thankful to have access to advice from three veterinarians and one very well-equipped animal hospital. Every Kesler puppy is socialized almost constantly, since someone is always holding one of the litter mates, and they learn to play well with children as Cathy's seven-year-old nephew Jesse comes to visit each weekend. They are very human oriented and love their people very much.

All breeding is controlled and carefully monitored, as are all births. Cathy takes great pride in handing over beautiful, healthy and well-adjusted puppies to their new guardians. She says, "There's nothing like getting that phone call from a screaming customer exclaiming, 'She's here, she's here... She's beautiful, she's perfect.' At that point I always ask, 'Well, do you like her?' and the answer is always a resounding yes, then and a week later and six months later. It is very satisfactory to know the dogs I love so much go on to become members of families who love them just as much, and that I have helped start a bond that lasts even beyond death. No one ever forgets their beloved dogs.

To cover more than thirty years of raising, running field trials with, or breeding SPO Field and Trial, hunting, or pocket-sized beagles could easily encompass an entire website of its own. However, Steve and Cathy are always more than pleased to answer any questions or discuss their beloved beagles.
